French Press is a classic low-maintenance brew method and is often a favorite for travel and camping. Its immersion brew (coffee and water interacting directly) paired with a mesh filter is great at pulling texture and body from any coffee. It brings depth to lighter, fruitier coffees and heavy chocolate tones to darker, nuttier roasts. It doesn't require the use of paper filters but does require meticulous cleaning and the occasional mesh filter replacement, as residual coffee oils can corrupt clarity of flavor if not regularly cleaned.

Coffee (50g)
Coffee Grinder
French Press

Hot Water (750g)
Hot Water Vessel (kettle or heat-safe pitcher)

GRIND | COARSE
50 GRAMS COFFEE : 750 GRAMS WATER
0:00 ~ 100 GRAMS TOTAL, BLOOM & SWIRL
0:30 ~ 750 GRAMS TOTAL, AGITATE, LID ON
4:00 ~ PRESS
.step by step.
Step 1.) Heat the water to between 200-205 degrees Fahrenheit. Rinse the French Press with a moderate amount of hot water to pre-heat, then empty the rinse water from the vessel.
Step 2.) Weigh 50 grams of whole bean coffee and grind on Coarse. Place in the bottom of the French Press. Place on kitchen scale and tare.
Step 3.) Pour 100 grams of hot water into the French Press and start the stopwatch. Allow the coffee to bloom.
Step 4.) After 30 seconds, swirl or stir the slurry at the bottom of the vessel until the grounds are evenly distributed. Pour the remaining 650 grams into the vessel, bringing the total on the scale to 750 grams.
Step 5.) Stir the slurry once more, then place the lid on top. Do not press all the way down, but gently push the filter rod until it reaches just below the surface of the slurry. This keeps the coffee grounds from rising to the top and not extracting completely.
Step 6.) When the stopwatch reads 4:00, press the filter rod all the way down. Transfer into a cup or decanter to prevent any further extraction.
Step 7.) Enjoy!
